色を見分けられない人たちの島
南太平洋のピンゲラップ島は、 かつて台風でほとんどの島民が亡くなってしまい、その時たまたま生き残った僅かな島民の中に全色盲（色が全く分からず、明るさしか知覚できない）の人が居 たために、その末えいの10人に1人が現在でも全色盲なのだという（ちなみに日本では数万人に1人）。その代わり、杆体細胞の働きによって闇夜での視力は とても良く、住民は夜になると活動しだして魚を捕るという独特の文化を形成していた。
このピンゲラップ島の旅行記を書いているのが、オリヴァー・サックスの「色のない島」というノンフィクション小説。あらためて「色って何だろう？」と考えさせられる一冊です。
